| Tim Thomas has spent his life riding and training horses. Experience gained studying horsemanship
and working with horses and horsemen throughout the western United States the past two decades has influenced and shaped his training methods based on his regard for, and
rapport with the horse. Tim has been working with both horses and their riders in the Sacramento valley, and adjacent foothills for better than ten years now. Clients haul
hundreds of miles to work with Tim based upon his reputation for promoting and producing sensible, secure, and solid riding
horses - horses that are reliable, responsive, and respectful.
In his approach to training, according to Tim: ~ "In addition to a good horse, the best program for the rider / handler is personal instruction." ~ "In addition to a knowledgeable handler / rider, the best program for the colt / horse is experiential learning." ~ "A dialogue needs to be established between the horse and human based on willing communication through the aids." ~ "The better that the aids are understood by both the horse and rider the more effective they will be." ~ "Keep in mind this is a developmental process for both horse and rider, a work-study program." ~ "Hence, my endorsement of an outdoor education for horse and rider in varying terrain that inspires, instructs, and improves the carriage and form of horse and rider." Here is what client, Kathy Pittman says of Tim's training methods: " I brought Tim my raw 2 year old Quarter Horse gelding. His skills were loading and leading. He had no other ground work. In three days, Tim was in the saddle. I couldn't believe it! The man has a way with horses. Tim didn't just start my gelding. He rode him in the arena, on the road, and a bizillion trail miles. Rain or shine. Tim and my horse were on the road six or seven days a week. Tim takes a personal interest in all the horses he trains. He wants the horse and rider to be safe. When Tim starts a horse, you can bet you're going to have a horse with a great foundation. With this foundation, the horse can continue to grow and learn. It doesn't matter what horse I buy or what the horse knows, Tim can always adjust to him and enhance his performance." In training riders, Tim provides the client with the tools they need to establish and maintain a safe and respectful working relationship with the horse. His method works, says client Betty Estep: " Tim gives the horse discipline through the lead, reins, and legs - and only in this fashion. The horse just seems to know that they will be alright. This is true horsemanship. Most instructors teach you to ride. Tim teaches horsemanship from the ground up."
